This course deals with the vulnerability of urban systems, cities and critical infrastructures, against hazards caused by natural events or antropic activites. The lessons report different examples of the city of Bologna (Italy) affected by subsidence induced by groundwater extraction and some cities (Christchurch - New Zealand, Terre del Reno - Italy, Urayasu - Japan) affecetd by seismic liquefaction. In all cases, the phenomena are described together with the effects on buildings. Strategies are then outlined to predict the effects and to mitigate them.
